Galatians 5:7-8 “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.”
I can remember running in track races when I was young. I had to stay in my lane, or I would be disqualified from the race. Even with knowing these rules, if I wasn’t paying close attention, I would occasionally step into another runner’s lane. But had I not known the rules to begin with, most likely, I would have been disqualified in every race. In the Christian life, the only lane that gets us across the finish line of eternal life is belief in Jesus Christ, the son of God, who died for our sins, was resurrected and now sits at the right hand of our Father in Heaven. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6). Are you running in this lane?
Satan knows God’s Word and knows he can’t win the race in any lane. So he has nothing to lose by cutting in your lane where he can slow you down and block your view of the finish line. And for people who don’t even know what lane their supposed to be in, Satan can easily disqualify them from the prize which the Apostle Paul refers to in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me on that day…”
When Satan gets us to question or go against God’s truth, or has us so busy we don’t have time for His Word, then we can easily slow down or even get out of the Christian lane. Hebrews 12:1 tells us how to avoid this: “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:2 additionally tells us to “fix our eyes on Jesus.” In other words, secure our eyes and attention on Jesus who has finished the race. Implant His life and character in our minds. Jesus is our example, and we fix our eyes on Him when we study the Bible.
Who or what is hindering your Christian race?
What will you do to make sure your eyes are fixed upon Jesus?
